When babies are overtired it causes them to not sleep well and they also get cranky. Sean and I know this very well, both from what we've read in countless places and our own experience with Erin as a baby.
But sometimes when you're in the middle of it, you don't notice that that's what's happening. We have somehow allowed both of our kids to become overtired.
Lately Erin has not been sleeping well (taking an hour to quiet down and fall asleep at night, waking up in the middle of the night, waking up early in the morning and not napping well), and has been a cranky, cranky two year old (I figured it was just her age).
I've said a few times on here how good of a baby Noah is for us. In general, this is true. But lately it has been harder and harder for me to put him down to sleep without him waking up - which is very frustrating after the tenth time. And when he does stay asleep, it's not for long stretches. I might get 30 minutes to an hour (I was getting 2 hour plus naps out of him).
We have finally put it together to realize they are both overtired.
Solution 1: Get Erin to bed an hour earlier. We started that last night and she still stayed awake for an hour, but instead of falling asleep at 9, it was 8.
Solution 2: It's not definite yet, but we might swap our bedroom with Noah's. Right now he shares a wall with Erin's room and the living room. We have a very LOUD toddler. I know she wakes him up often. Also, his room is the brightest and hottest in the house. And our bedroom is dark, cool and away from the noisy one.
Today I have been putting him down for his naps in our room. His first nap was 45 minutes, the second was an hour and 45 minutes and the third was 40 (his shorter naps are when he's waking up to eat). Each time he has gone down just fine without me having to pick him up to rock him back to sleep a second time.
Gotta keep on top of these things or everything just gets crazy.
