Things Are Going Well

As expected, it's been hard to find time to sit down and write about how things are going. Any free time is spent sleeping or relaxing with my feet up (still have swollen ankles).

Generally speaking, things have been going great. Nursing has been going very well and he's been sleeping great too. His weight went from 7lbs 8oz down to 6lbs 12oz. But today he was back up to 7lbs 1oz. So we know he's getting enough to eat.

Erin was such a difficult newborn, that Noah is pretty much making this a breeze for us. And maybe it's because we've already done this, but regardless he is easier to care for. I would say we are tired but not near exhausted.

Our one big complication this week has been that his jaundice levels got really high on Monday. His levels were very close to him needing to be admitted to the children's hospital for treatment. But luckily they were just low enough to allow us to treat him at home with the light phototherapy. So for about two days we've had to keep him under the light box and only take him out to feed.

But he actually did very well with it. He slept most of the time between feedings, only giving us a handful of times where he'd cry. We were allowed to take him out to comfort him, but if he didn't settle down within a few minutes, we just had to put him back to settle down on his own.

The good news is that we took him back to the doctor this morning and his levels are back down low enough that we can stop the lights. We're very glad that was a quick thing.

I don't have any new photos to share because we just haven't been able to take any the past couple of days. We plan on getting him outside soon, although it's raining today.

My parents will be here very shortly. They will be relieving the Barnettes who have now been here for 2 weeks. If it wasn't for the first false alarm, it wouldn't have needed to be that long. I'm sure they will enjoy getting home and getting a break for caring for a two year old :)

I've always thought of the light boxes or bili-blankets as reverse tanning beds. We put babies into them to get rid of their lovely golden brown color. Glad to see Noah's liver function is improving.
